Aqaba Promenade — Designing with the Angry Sea

Located along the coast of the Red Sea, this project redefines the relationship between architecture and nature. Under the direct supervision of HRH Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, I was honored to lead the architectural design for the Aqaba Promenade — a 1-kilometer coastal stretch that merges public life, ecology, and cultural identity.

A Vision Built on the Sea’s Edge

Working closely with the site and its challenges, we conducted a comprehensive site survey to understand the water flow, preserve the coral beds, and assess the broader ecological impact. These insights shaped every design decision, from the way we framed sea views to how we engaged the terrain.

Raised terraces were introduced to respect the coral-rich landscape, providing both access and elevation without interrupting the natural formations. Sea views from the main street were carefully preserved by balancing solid and void proportions throughout the built massing ensuring that architecture enhanced the experience rather than blocking it.

Smart Zoning and 3D Visioning

The promenade was divided into functional zones that blended leisure, culture, and community. We developed master plans, detailed layouts, and high-precision 3D models to communicate the vision. These included:

  • Pedestrian-friendly pathways
  • Viewing terraces
  • Cultural exhibition areas
  • Shaded rest zones

We also produced full 3D animations and shots for stakeholder presentations and governmental review.

Sustainability & Material Integrity

Every material was selected with sustainability in mind. We worked closely with suppliers to match specifications while respecting the coastal climate and salt exposure. Eco-friendly strategies were integrated into the design and construction process, minimizing environmental disruption.

On the structural side, We collaborated with engineers to address the challenges of building on coral-rich land. We designed custom foundations and support systems that anchored securely while protecting sensitive marine life.

Features that Bring the Promenade to Life
  • A landmark lighthouse beacon designed as a sculptural element and functional guide.
  • An open-air sculpture garden that celebrates Jordanian and regional artists.
  • A large digital screen integrated into one of the main façades for outdoor film screenings and dynamic advertising.
  • Mediterranean design language, with red-tiled roofs and natural stone finishes.
Stakeholder Engagement & Execution

Regular design reviews were held with ASEZA (Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority), ensuring compliance and refinement at every stage. I also oversaw construction execution, conducted site visits, and managed coordination between contractors, suppliers, and consultants.
